Tuning Into World Listening Day

You might be surprised by how different each person’s perception is

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — For those of you who can still hear after the roar of low flying jets, Today is World Listening Day, a global observance dedicated to the art and practice of active listening. Established by the World Listening Project in 2010, this day was chosen to commemorate the birthday of R. Murray Schafer, a renowned Canadian composer, author, and environmentalist.
World Listening Day invites us to make an important distinction: the difference between hearing and listening. While hearing is a passive biological process, listening is an active, intentional practice. It requires us to engage with our surroundings with empathy, attention, and curiosity. In our modern, often overstimulated lives, we frequently tune out the "background" noises of our daily routines. Today is a reminder to pause, quiet the noise, and truly listen to the sonic textures—the birdsong, the wind, the rhythm of human voices, or the hum of our environment—that shape our experiences.
Intentional listening can be a powerful tool for personal well-being, helping to soothe thoughts, reduce stress, and foster a deeper connection to our communities. Sit in silence with friends, family, or colleagues for a few minutes, and then share what you heard. You might be surprised by how different each person’s perception is.
World Listening Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is an invitation to slow down and embrace stillness. By weaving the practice of intentional listening into our daily lives, we can build deeper connections with the world, our environment, and each other. So, take a moment today to stop, breathe, and let the symphony of the world unfold around you.
