Understanding Airbnb New Occupancy Tax Collection and Remittance Policy in Alabama
R. Peevy • September 17, 2026
Effective September 15th, 2026, Airbnb will collect and remit the following taxes:

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — Lodging rental taxes serve as a primary source of local revenue in resort communities, ensuring that visiting travelers fund destination development rather than local residents. These tax dollars directly power area advertising, marketing campaigns, and visitor services that sustain year-round tourism and support local businesses.
In addition to driving promotional efforts, lodging revenue finances essential public infrastructure and municipal upgrades—such as parks, road projects, public safety services, emergency facilities, and beach restoration—which directly enhance the quality of life for resident communities.
Effective in September of this year, Airbnb automatically collects and remits occupancy taxes on behalf of hosts for listings across Alabama. This policy simplifies tax compliance for hosts while ensuring guests pay the appropriate state, county, and municipal taxes at the time of booking.
State-Level Tax Collection
Guests booking Airbnb accommodations in Alabama are subject to several state-administered taxes for reservations of 179 nights or shorter:
- Alabama State Lodging Tax: 4% to 5% of the listing price, including cleaning fees and guest fees.
- County Lodging Taxes (State-Collected): 1% to 9% of the listing price, including cleaning fees and guest fees.
- Municipal Lodging Taxes (State-Collected): 2% to 13% of the listing price, including cleaning fees and guest fees.
Local Tax Rates by City and County
In addition to state-level taxes, specific county and municipal lodging taxes apply based on the listing's location:
- Gulf Shores: 10% lodging tax (5% within the Police Jurisdiction) for reservations up to 179 nights.
- Orange Beach: 10% lodging tax (5% within the Police Jurisdiction) for reservations of 179 nights or shorter.
