Mobile, Ala. — (GSN) —The planned I-10 Mobile River Bridge is set to become an architectural landmark, featuring the second-highest deck of any bridge over a navigable waterway in the United States, behind only the Golden Gate Bridge. However, as planning moves forward, a passionate debate has emerged over a seemingly simple question: what should it be named?

With proposals sparking arguments across social media and political circles, three prominent figures have surfaced as the top choices: Donald Trump, Jimmy Buffett, and Hank Aaron.

The Case for Donald J. Trump

The push to name the new crossing after the former president began when some Alabama Republicans suggested honoring Donald Trump.

Proponents of this choice point to similar moves in other states, such as Tennessee’s recent legislative decision to rename a portion of an I-40 bridge after Trump. For supporters, naming a massive piece of Southern infrastructure after Trump is a fitting tribute to his political movement and impact.

Critics argue that public infrastructure should not serve as a monument to highly polarizing, active political figures. Opponents also note that Trump is not an Alabama native and has no direct ties to the Mobile area.

The Case for Jimmy Buffett

Looking for a less polarizing alternative, State Senator Chris Elliott, who represents much of Baldwin County, suggested honoring Gulf Coast music icon Jimmy Buffett instead.

Buffett, who grew up in Mobile and went to school in the area, represents the laid-back, coastal lifestyle synonymous with the region. Senator Chris Elliott and other supporters view Buffett as a unifying, non-political figure whose music brought joy to people of all political stripes. While Pascagoula, Mississippi, already has a small bridge named after Buffett, fans argue that Alabama's massive new gateway is a much more appropriate tribute to his global legacy.

Some skeptics argue that a major state-funded transportation corridor should not be named after a commercial brand or entertainer, though the idea remains highly popular among locals.

The Case for Henry "Hank" Aaron

U.S. Representative Shomari Figures offered a third path, arguing that while he loves Jimmy Buffett, the bridge should be named after Mobile's ultimate homegrown hero: baseball legend Henry "Hank" Aaron.

Born in Mobile's Toulminville neighborhood, Aaron is widely regarded as one of the most famous and impactful figures the city and state have ever produced. Beyond breaking Major League Baseball's all-time home run record in the face of blatant racism and death threats, Aaron was a global icon, athlete, and dedicated philanthropist. Proponents believe naming the bridge after Aaron would honor a true native son who represents resilience and triumph.

Opponents point out that Aaron already has the downtown loop in Mobile named after him. However, supporters counter that a landmark of this scale is a far more fitting tribute to his historic achievements.

Alternative and Compromise Paths

As the debate between MAGA, Margaritaville, and the Home Run King continues, several alternative paths have emerged.

Some locals have suggested a compromise: naming it the Aaron-Buffett Bridge to honor the area's two most celebrated former residents together.

A survey of nearly 1,000 local residents conducted by Downtown Mobile Today revealed that the most popular choice was actually to name it after no person at all. Instead, most respondents preferred simply calling it the Mobile River Bridge. Proponents of this view argue that because the bridge is funded by public tax dollars and represents the entire community, it should be named after the city and the river itself, rather than any individual.
