The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Gulf Shores has a new resident that is helping raise awareness about one of the world's most endangered big cats. Mystique, an eleven-year-old melanistic Amur leopard, recently arrived at the zoo and has already started showing off her personality to keepers. The rare black-coated leopard joins the zoo's big cat family as part of ongoing conservation education efforts. Zoo officials say Mystique's presence will help teach visitors about the critical threats facing her species in the wild.

The zoo announced Mystique's arrival on December 8, 2025. She came to the Alabama facility from Tanganyika Wildlife Park, where she played an important role in Amur leopard breeding programs. Now she will continue her conservation work by raising awareness at her new Gulf Shores home.

Mystique is melanistic, which means her coat is completely black instead of the typical yellow and black coloring seen in most Amur leopards. Her fur still has the distinctive spots called rosettes that are characteristic of leopards, but they are only visible when she stands in direct sunlight. This rare coloring makes her especially striking to zoo visitors.

Amur leopards are among the most endangered big cats on the planet. Only an estimated 100 to 120 individuals remain in the wild today. Mystique enjoys rolling around in the grass and taking long naps throughout the day. She also likes to play games with her keepers by hiding behind trees and jumping out to surprise them as they walk past her enclosure. These playful behaviors show that she is comfortable and thriving in her new environment.

Visitors to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo can see Mystique during regular operating hours. The zoo is open daily from nine a.m. to four p.m. Guests will have the chance to observe this rare melanistic leopard and learn about conservation efforts for her species.
