Great family attraction adds to their own family members

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is growing its animal family with the arrival of two Zebu, a type of domestic cattle recognized for their historical significance and distinctive appearance. These hardy animals, scientifically classified as Bos taurus indicus, are known for their remarkable heat tolerance, loose skin, and iconic shoulder humps.
Originating in South Asia thousands of years ago, Zebu are now found in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe. With their gentle dispositions and unique physical traits—such as large ears for heat dissipation and a high concentration of sweat glands—the new Zebu pair serves as an excellent ambassador for climate-resilient livestock. Their coat colors can vary from shades of white and gray to deep reddish hues, reflecting the diversity of a species that has been domesticated for over 5,000 years.
"We’re thrilled to welcome these beautiful animals to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo," said Executive Director Joel Hamilton. "Every new arrival gives our community another way to connect with wildlife and deepen their appreciation for the natural world".
The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, located in Gulf Shores, Alabama, is a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation and education. Accredited by the Zoological Association of America, the zoo houses more than 280 animals across 118 different species. The facility is well-known for its immersive educational programs and keeper presentations, such as the Afternoon Big Cat Chat and Bird Chat, which aim to inspire guests to protect the natural world.
Visitors are invited to see the zoo’s newest residents daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.. Guests can learn more about the Zebu’s history, adaptations, and role in cultures across Africa, Asia, and the Americas by visiting the zoo in person.
