Being Prepared For The Temperatures

Gulf Shores News Staff • January 24, 2026

Temps will go below freezing for most of the week

Gulf Shores Weather News

It may not snow next week but the frigid temperatures can do serious damage for the unprepared home and boat owner along the coast. The elevated homes and outboard boat motors bring a different challenge as forecasters expect temperatures to drop into the freezing range.

Beginning Monday and continuing through Friday, the Alabama coast is forecaster to have lows in the 20's. The long period of freeze can do damage to exposed pipes and small boat motors, which are typically trailered during this season.

Protecting beach homes during cold spells requires addressing plumbing, structural sealing, and the unique challenges of coastal winds.

Protect Plumbing and Water Systems

  • Insulate Exposed Pipes: Wrap pipes in crawl spaces, attics, and exterior walls with foam sleeves or Heat Tape.
  • Manage Outdoor Faucets: Disconnect hoses, drain water from the line, and install Insulated Faucet Covers on all exterior spigots.
  • Maintain Minimum Heat: Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C) even when unoccupied to prevent interior pipes from freezing.
  • Circulate Air: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer room air to reach the plumbing.
  • Winterize Irrigation: Shut off and blow out irrigation systems to prevent underground pipes from bursting.

According to marina guides, to protect outboard boat motors in cold temperatures, the most critical step is storing the motor in a full vertical (down) position to allow all water to drain, preventing cracked blocks from frozen, trapped water. A key item may include flushing the cooling system with antifreeze.

We strongly suggest staying up to date with the National Weather Service for current Conditions.
