The waves may be smaller but the swell of surfers is growing

Surfing news in Gulf Shores, Alabama

Over the decades of tourism on Alabama's beaches the sport of surfing has slowly grown. There are now popular surf shops on the island and you can see surfboards on the top of Jeeps or in the back of pickups. The surfers wait for the breeze or extreme action of the tides, then take off for the jetties and other popular  areas.

Today, June 21st, is International Surfing Day, and it’s the perfect time to celebrate the rich history of surfing and explore the surf culture along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. From its ancient Polynesian roots to modern-day surf shops like Ron Jon Surf Shop in Orange Beach and Tambo’s Surf Shack in Gulf Shores, surfing continues to inspire and bring people together.

Surfing traces its origins back over a thousand years to ancient Polynesia, where it was more than just a sport—it was a deeply spiritual practice. Polynesians, particularly in Hawaii, used wooden boards to ride waves, a skill often reserved for chiefs and warriors. Surfing was intertwined with rituals and social status, reflecting the ocean's significance in their culture.

When European explorers arrived in the 18th century, they documented these surfing practices, introducing the concept to the Western world. Over time, surfing evolved, spreading globally and becoming a symbol of freedom, adventure, and connection to nature.

Ron Jon Surf Shop – Orange Beach

Established in 1959 by Ron DiMenna in Ship Bottom, New Jersey, Ron Jon Surf Shop has grown into a renowned surf retail chain with locations across the U.S., including Orange Beach. Known for its extensive selection of surfboards, skateboards, apparel, and beach accessories, Ron Jon caters to both seasoned surfers and beach enthusiasts. The Orange Beach store offers a wide range of products, from swimwear and sun protection to souvenirs and beach gear, making it a one-stop destination for all beachgoers.

Tambo's Surf Shack – Gulf Shores

Located in Gulf Shores, Tambo's Surf Shack is a local gem that embodies the spirit of community and passion for board sports. Owned by Mike Tomburello, the shop offers surf and skate lessons, apparel, equipment, and even hosts a summer camp called Camp Shred. With an indoor skate park and a commitment to fostering local talent, Tambo's has become a hub for both beginners and seasoned riders looking to connect and grow within the surf and skate community.

Embracing Surf Culture on the Gulf Coast

While Alabama may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of surfing, the state's Gulf Coast offers a unique and welcoming surf scene. The warm waters and gentle waves provide an ideal environment for beginners, while the dedicated local shops and communities ensure that the spirit of surfing thrives.

This International Surfing Day, consider visiting Ron Jon Surf Shop in Orange Beach or Tambo's Surf Shack in Gulf Shores to immerse yourself in the local surf culture. Whether you're catching your first wave or simply enjoying the beach vibes, these establishments offer a glimpse into the enduring allure of surfing.
