Phinn: A Four-Legged Beacon of Support

Phin the Comfort Dog

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — The Gulf Shores City Council recently highlighted a heartwarming addition to the local school system: Phin, a dedicated comfort dog. Introduced during the August 3, 2026, work session, Phin is already making a significant impact on the emotional well-being of students and faculty alike.

Phin’s presence in the schools is the result of a collaborative community effort. He was donated to the Gulf Shores City Schools by Mayor and Mrs. Craft, who also personally funded the dog’s extensive professional training. Ensuring Phin remains healthy and ready for his duties, local veterinarian Dr. Langston provides all necessary veterinary services free of charge.

Phin’s primary role is to provide comfort and alleviate the daily pressures of the school environment. Jake Hare, an eighth-grade student at Gulf Shores Middle School, shared that interacting with Phin helps him feel more confident and connected to his school. According to student accounts, Phin has a remarkable ability to sense when someone is in need of support, often leaning against them to offer a calming presence.

Jake noted that Phin helps "slow down the pace of the day," effectively reducing stress and improving the overall mood of those around him. This emotional support has proven vital in helping students navigate the challenges of their educational journey.

The initiative was inspired by the success of a similar comfort dog program at UMS, which features a dog named Wright. Seeing the positive outcomes of that program, Gulf Shores leadership sought to replicate that success locally.

Mrs. Craft has expressed a vision to expand this program so that every campus within the school system has its own comfort dog. Currently, there is a goal to have one dog for each of the three school campuses. Realizing this goal will require additional support staff to manage the animals and potentially more community sponsors. A challenge has been issued to the community and council members to help sponsor these additional comfort animals to ensure all students can benefit from this unique form of support.
