Helping Hands initiative delivers crocheted animals to local first responders

Gulf Shores Library and First Responders

The Gulf Shores Public Library has achieved a significant milestone with its Helping Hands community service initiative. The group recently delivered its first baskets of handmade crocheted animals to Gulf Shores Fire Rescue and the Gulf Shores Police Department. These soft toys will now be placed in local emergency vehicles to comfort children during emergencies. The thoughtful effort demonstrates how creativity and compassion can come together to make a genuine difference in the community.

The delivery took place earlier this month as part of Helping Hands’ ongoing effort to support first responders and young residents. The program officially began in 2025 and quickly drew interest from locals eager to use their skills to help others. Each crocheted animal demonstrates the talent, time, and care of a volunteer working to provide comfort to children affected by fires, accidents, and other emergencies.

Every item created by Helping Hands tells a story of community involvement. Through this program, the library encourages residents to connect with each other while learning or practicing crochet. In addition to providing emotional support to children, participants have the opportunity to build new friendships and develop creative skills. The effort emphasizes the power of small, handmade gestures in moments when they matter most.

The library shared that the long-term goal of Helping Hands is to ensure every police and fire vehicle in Gulf Shores is stocked with these handmade companions. Once those vehicles are fully supplied, the club plans to expand its efforts to other community needs. According to library staff, this project exemplifies how Gulf Shores residents continue to come together to support one another.

The library welcomes volunteers of all ages and skill levels to join Helping Hands. Even beginners can contribute by learning crochet with guidance from more experienced members. “Together, we can turn yarn into comfort and help make Gulf Shores a more supportive place for everyone,” organizers said.

Community members interested in volunteering or learning more about the program can visit the Gulf Shores Public Library or call 251-968-1176 for details.
