This will allow vehicle traffic from new bridge to Hwy 59

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — Since construction began on the new pedestrian bridge, Gulf Shores residents have been forced to detour through local neighborhoods to access Canal Road. Property owners in those areas can finally see an end to this congestion, however, thanks to a strategic land swap that paves the way for a permanent bypass road connecting the bridge directly to Highway 59.
The City of Gulf Shores has moved forward with a significant infrastructure project designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity between the city's eastern corridor and Highway 59. Central to this effort is a strategic land exchange with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), which manages Gulf State Park.
As the Gulf Coast continues to experience significant growth, local officials have prioritized the modernization of transportation routes to handle increased vehicular volume. The recent opening of the new Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) bridge represents a major milestone in improving mobility, providing new southbound and northbound capacity.
However, city leadership, including Mayor Robert Craft, has emphasized that long-term traffic relief depends on more than just the bridge itself; it requires a robust connection that allows traffic to flow efficiently between Canal Road and Highway 59. A 2023 Corridor Study conducted by the City evaluated various alternatives for this east-west connection, aiming to provide a reliable route while minimizing disruption to the community.
To construct the necessary roadway without encroaching on existing residential neighborhoods, the City of Gulf Shores has negotiated a land swap with Gulf State Park. The terms of this agreement include:
- Property to the City: The acquisition of 30.19 acres of undeveloped land from Gulf State Park, intended to accommodate future infrastructure improvements.
- Property to the State: The transfer of 53.71 acres of undeveloped land from the City to the ADCNR for inclusion in Gulf State Park.
By acquiring this specific acreage from the state park, the city gains the right-of-way required to build a connector road. This route serves as a strategic path that allows for infrastructure development while bypassing established subdivisions, preserving the integrity of residential areas.
As the city continues to execute its capital improvement projects, the land exchange stands as a vital step in realizing a more accessible and better-connected Gulf Shores. The council unanimously approved this property swap during the July 13 meeting.
