Coastal Alabama's contributions and celebration

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — As the nation commemorates its 250th Independence Day, we stand at a historic milestone, reflecting on the journey from the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the sovereign, dynamic nation we are today. This Fourth of July is more than just a celebration of fireworks and summer gatherings; it is a moment to honor the core ideals of liberty, democracy, and self-governance that define the American spirit.
The story of the Fourth of July began in the halls of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. While the vote for independence occurred on July 2, 1776, it was the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, that gave birth to a new chapter in history.
As we celebrate the nation's 250th birthday, it is fitting to highlight the contributions of Alabama, a state that has played a complex and pivotal role in the American narrative. From its roots in Native American heritage to its emergence as a hub of modern innovation, Alabama has been central to the defining moments of the United States.
Equally vital to this story is the strategic beauty of coastal Baldwin County, a region that has long served as a silent guardian of our shores. Standing at the mouth of Mobile Bay, historic Fort Morgan remains a powerful testament to the nation’s trials; it was here that the pivotal Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864—famous for Admiral David Farragut's "Damn the torpedoes" order—occurred, helping to secure a crucial Union victory. Yet, the county’s contributions extend well beyond the 19th century. During the Second World War, the area became a crucible for American air power, with the open skies and training fields around Foley providing essential preparation for a new generation of aviators. It was amidst the coastal landscape near Orange Beach in March 1942 that the legendary Doolittle Raiders practiced their bomb runs, honing the precision and courage that would soon define their daring mission. From the echoes of 19th-century naval blockades to the roar of 20th-century aircraft, Baldwin County’s shores have consistently stood as a front line for the defense of our nation's liberty.
Most consequential have been all of the men and women from Baldwin County who have served this nation or supported others during their service.
As we mark this 250th Independence Day, we recognize that our nation’s strength lies in our ability to learn from our past while striving for a more perfect union. Alabama’s contributions remain a vital thread in the fabric of the United States—reminding us all that liberty and the pursuit of a better future remain a shared American calling.
