'This is sick and twisted': Britt vows to hold Meta accountable after report

Senator Katie Britt News

AI Chatbots are changing the world but sometimes it goes a step too far, or too low when it come to our children. A recent article by Trent Baker of 1819 News highlights the problem and what an Alabama Senator is doing to protect the kids.

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) is vowing to do whatever it takes to prevent Meta Platforms from being able to engage with "romantic or sensual" conversations with children after a Reuters report exposed an internal policy document that permitted the company’s chatbots to flirt with minors.

Meta reportedly confirmed the document’s authenticity to Reuters, but said that it had removed "portions which stated it is permissible for chatbots to flirt and engage in romantic roleplay with children" after being questioned by the outlet.

On Friday, Britt reacted to another Reuters report in which a cognitively impaired New Jersey man was lured to New York to meet a Meta AI chatbot he had been speaking with, and later died. The man's story brought to light Meta's now-updated guidelines.

"The growing culture of preying on our kids is OUTRAGEOUS. Meta is allowing bots to hold 'sensual' chats with CHILDREN!!" Britt wrote on X. "Are you kidding me? This is sick and twisted. I will not stop until they are held accountable."

She later added, "It is PAST time for Congress to grow a spine. This is insane. Tell your Senator and Congressman to STOP protecting Big Tech and START protecting the people they serve - especially the most vulnerable among us, OUR CHILDREN."

Britt has made protecting the youth from the harmful impacts of social media a top priority in office. In May, she joined U.S. Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) in introducing the Kids Off Social Media Act. She co-sponsored the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), which passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee in February.

“There is no doubt that our nation’s growing mental health crisis is inextricably tied to the rise of social media usage by children and teenagers. However, while our adolescents face these threats that are quite literally at their fingertips, Big Tech companies like TikTok continue to turn a blind eye. The dangers of social media transcend political party – our children deserve better than social media companies who prey on their adolescence,” Britt stated last year in response to an NPR article detailing how TikTok executives blatantly disregarded the health and well-being of app users in favor of the company’s bottom line.

"Congress must act to protect the wellbeing of America’s kids because Big Tech prioritizes profits over people. I won’t stop fighting to protect the next generation and ensure each and every young person in our nation has the opportunity to live their American Dream," she added.
