Strong pitching from MK McMullan and timely hitting powered Orange Beach

Makos Softball Championship

Oxford, Ala. – (GSN) – Orange Beach is poised to make history with a chance to claim a sixth straight Alabama softball state championship. The Lady Makos struggled at times at the plate, got stellar pitching from MK McMullan, and pounded out timely hits in two big innings to go 3-0 on the day and a date in the championship round to complete the historic sweep.

First pitch on May 19 at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the softball stadium at the complex. The Makos will face the survivor of the Class 4A losers bracket. On May 18, Orange Beach beat West Limestone, 2-0, American Christian Academy, 12-0, and Plainview, 11-2.

In a pitcher’s duel, MK McMullan pitched no-hit softball and had six strikeouts to bring her total to more than 200 for the year. Against Katie Lyn Kyle, who had eight strikeouts, the Makos managed only four hits of their own and scratched out runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the morning win. Katie King had both RBIs for Orange Beach in the game.

The bats came out smoking against ACA as the Lady Makos turned seven hits into an 8-0 lead off the first inning. McMullan and Kinsley Blackwell each had two RBIs in the inning.

Orange Beach 11, Plainview 2

It was an early struggle for the Makos, falling behind 2-0 but battling back to take a 5-2 lead after five innings. In the sixth, the Makos bats came to life for eight runs to take command of the game, with the big blow coming from the bat of Taylor Poland with a bases-clearing triple. McMullan nailed down Plainview for the final six outs to complete the win.

No school’s softball team in Alabama has won six straight state championships, and Orange Beach can complete the feat with a win in the championship game. With a loss, the Makos would play the same team a second time to determine the state champions.
