A new year starts with new contenders to the championship

College Football Playoff

The new year started with a bang in college football. Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State are all out of the College Football Playoffs. Combined those schools account for 30 football championships according to the NCAA. The final four teams of the CFP are Indiana, Oregon, Ole Miss and Miami. The four game results on New Year's Eve and day left odds-makers scratching their heads.


Miami - 24

Ohio State - 14


Oregon - 23

Texas Tech - 0


Indiana - 38

Alabama - 3


Ole Miss - 39

Georgia - 34


January 8th and 9th the top four teams will battle for the right to play in the National Championship game on January 19th in Miami.


QUATER FINAL NOTES:

  • Tenth-seeded Miami became the first double-digit seed in the 12-team era to make the semifinals.
  • Ole Miss coach Pete Golding has taken over after Lane Kiffin bolted for the job as LSU head coach.
  • Alabama suffered its worst bowl defeat in program history.
  • The most valuable player in the Rose Bowl was an offensive lineman,


GAME LOCATIONS:

The four quarterfinal games are not played on campus sites like in the first round. The quarterfinals, scheduled on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 — were played at the Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. The four highest-ranked teams will be assigned one of these bowls in consideration of historic bowl relationships as well as seeding.


The four quarterfinal winners will now meet in the semifinals at the Fiesta Bowl or the Peach Bowl on Jan. 8 and Jan. 9.  The two semifinal winners will then play on Monday, Jan. 19 in Miami for the CFP national championship.

Now that the brackets have been set for the FINAL FOUR, fans are touting how the playoff system has proven to be the right decision. In the past sports writers and coaches would selection the champion after the bowl game results. Now the top teams play the games to determine the National Champions.


When the ESPN Bracket Challenge started 31% of the national participants picked last year's champion, Ohio State to take in all again. Indiana is the highest pick still standing from the challenge.
