National Safe Boating Week Remind Us To Care For Others

National Safe Boating Week Is A Reminder For All Locals

Whether you are captaining a 20-foot center console or an 80-foot yacht, a boat owner is responsible for everyone on board the vessel.  As National Safe Boating Week unfolds from May 17–23, 2025, coastal Alabama,  joins communities nationwide in promoting boating safety. With its intricate network of waterways—including the Gulf of Mexico, Perdido Pass, Cotton Bayou, Terry Cove, Old River, Wolf Bay, Perdido Bay, and the Intracoastal Waterway—local waters offer both beauty and challenges for boaters. This week serves as a timely reminder for all to prioritize safety on the water.

Essential Boating Safety Tips

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:

  • Wear Life Jackets: Alabama law mandates U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vests for all on board, with children under eight required to wear them at all times.

  • Monitor Weather Conditions: Sudden storms can arise; always check forecasts before departure.

  • Avoid Alcohol: Operating a vessel under the influence is illegal and increases the risk of accidents.

  • Respect No-Wake Zones: Areas like Terry Cove and Cotton Bayou have speed restrictions to protect both marine life and fellow boaters.

  • Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with local boating laws and guidelines.

For comprehensive safety guidelines, visit the Safe Boating Campaign and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's boating regulations.

Local Initiatives and Resources

Orange Beach actively promotes boating safety through various programs:

  • U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Classes: Offering courses on boating safety and certification.
  • Waterways & Shoreline Cleanup: Efforts to maintain clean and safe waterways for all.
  • Public Safety Campaigns: Regular updates and advisories to keep the community informed.

Engaging with these resources enhances safety and fosters a responsible boating culture.

During National Safe Boating Week, residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in events and share safety tips on social media using hashtags like #SafeBoatingWeek and #OrangeBeachBoating. By promoting awareness and education, we can all contribute to safer waterways.

Embracing boating safety ensures that Orange Beach remains a cherished destination for all who venture onto its waters. Let's commit to responsible boating practices this week and beyond.
