Orange Beach has been facing an avalanche of new building request in recent months. Two more are now in front of the City Council and one of the projects is being proposed by local contractor, Greg Kennedy.

A public hearing will be part of the City Council meeting. The subject is to amend the zoning ordinance so a planned unit development for 3.7 acres at the southwest corner of the Canal Road and Captain Trent Lane intersection. Developer Greg Kennedy wants to put 33 single-family residences on the parcel. The planning commission gave an unfavorable recommendation on the project at the May meeting.

Springhill Suites will be the subject of another public hearing on a modification of a planned unit development for a new Springhill Suites under construction on the north side of beach road between Sharky’s (old Live Bait) and Doc’s Seafood and Steaks. The change deals with buffering on the north side of the lot and changing roof features on the hotel. A total of 120 rooms are proposed, and the building will be seven stories.

During the regular session, the council will discuss:

• Approving checks for goods and services July 4-17 for $563,087.
• Authorizing the purchase of a video surveillance system with access control for city hall from Vision Security for $57,713.
• Hiring Jay Jackson for construction of the set for the play Shrek the Musical for $10,000.
• Authorizing a $5,000 agreement with McLean Motor Sports Productions for the Bama Coast Cruisin’ as part of the annual Freedom Fest. There will be another item authorizing a $1,500 contract with Gulf Coast Gun Collectors Association at the Event Center and also during Freedom Fest.
• Authorizing Orange Beach to join the state and other local governments in opioid settlements.
• Declaring contents of a house recently purchased by the city as surplus and donating some of it to Habitat for Humanity and authorizing the disposal of remaining property.

During the work session, the council will discuss:

• Purchasing a mini excavator for the utilities department for $53,664 from Parish Tractor in Robertsdale.
• Buying four new vehicles from Stivers Ford for $203,954 for four 2024 Ford F-150 supercrew pickups.
• Authorizing a contract with McCollough Architecture to design a building planned for the city’s shooting range.
• Accepting a statement of work from Civic Plus for online process automation and digital services.
• Authorizing a contract with AECOM to do a traffic signal evaluation on State Route 180 at The Wharf for $15,750.
• Accepting a $10,000 grant from the Gulf Coast Resources Conservation and Development Council for the Cotton Bayou and Terry Cove navigation aids project.
• Amending an ordinance concerning fire department emergency transport service to place a mileage limit on transporting patients.
