Starting Today You Will Need A Real ID To Fly In The U.S.
Gulf Shores News Staff • February 1, 2026
Real ID (Star ID) is now required for domestic airline travel

Beginning February 1st you will need a "Real ID" to fly within the United States on an airline. If you go to the airport without one you will be charged a mandatory $45 "identity verification fee." You will also have to be prepared to get a biometric scan.
In Alabama residents can get the Real (Star) ID at an ALEA DMV office, where you typically go for your driver's license. You will need to take a few documents with you in order to verify your identity:
- Proof of Identity and Date of Birth (One required):
- Certified U.S. Birth Certificate (must be from the Bureau of Vital Statistics).
- Valid, unexpired U.S. Passport.
- Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship.
- Proof of Social Security Number (One required):
- Social Security Card.
- W-2 form or 1099 form.
- Social Security benefits statement.
- Proof of Residence (Two required, must be less than 90 days old):
- Utility bill (water, gas, or electric).
- Residential mortgage contract or Lease/Rental Agreement.
- Voter registration card.
- Vehicle registration in your name.
- Homeowners insurance policy or statement.
- Name Change Documents (If Applicable):
- If your name on your identity document differs from your current name, you must provide a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.
Important Tips for Alabama STAR ID
- Where to Go: STAR IDs cannot be obtained at local county probate offices; you must visit an ALEA Driver License Examining Office.
- Cost: A new or duplicate STAR ID costs $36.25, and they do not accept checks.
- Appearance: The card will have a gold star in the upper right-hand corner.
- Alternatives: If you have a valid passport, you do not need a STAR ID to fly domestically.
TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States. However, unaccompanied minors who are eligible for TSA PreCheck must show an acceptable ID to receive expedited screening. Contact the airline for questions regarding their specific ID requirements for travelers under 18.

If your license doesn't have that little gold star in the corner, you're officially on notice. It's a lot cheaper to spend an hour at the DMV than it is to pay a surcharge (procrastination tax) every time you want to board a plane.
