Nighttime Construction to Affect East Canal Road Traffic

Road work news in Gulf Shores area

Motorists should expect delays on East Canal Road on the nights of Sunday and Monday, October 15th and 16th. The road will be limited to a single lane from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. The affected area is between the newly opened roundabout and State Highway 161, also known as Orange Beach Boulevard.

The lane reduction is part of an ongoing road-widening project. Thompson Engineering is overseeing the project, while John G. Walton Construction Company, Inc. is handling the construction. The work specifically involves improvements to the concrete median.

The project, which began in September 2022, aims to widen approximately 1.4 miles of East Canal Road. The road will eventually feature three lanes, including a middle turn lane. A 10-foot multi-use path is also under construction on the road's north side between State Highway 161 and Wilson Boulevard.

Speed limits in the construction zone will be strictly enforced at 25 mph for the safety of all. The project, costing $7.36 million, is primarily funded by the RESTORE Act, covering $5.9 million. Completion is expected by early 2024.
