The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) is reminding residents that a seasonal burn ban starts today, May 1st. It will continue through the end of October. The ban is aimed at protecting the air during the warmer months. Baldwin County is one of 12 counties in Alabama included in the ban.
The purpose of the ban is to reduce harmful pollution in the air. It helps stop the formation of ground-level ozone and fine particles, both of which can cause breathing problems. These pollutants are especially dangerous for people with asthma, COPD, or other lung conditions.
Ground-level ozone forms when gases from cars, open burning, and power plants react with heat and sunlight. Unlike the ozone high in the atmosphere, which protects us from UV rays, ozone near the ground harms human health. It can irritate lungs and make it harder to breathe.
Smoke from burning wood and yard debris also produces fine particles. These small particles can travel deep into the lungs and lead to serious health problems. That’s why stopping open burning during hot months is so important.
The ban prohibits burning wood, tree trimmings, brush, and debris from land clearing or construction materials. ADEM suggests turning debris into compost or mulch instead. Yard waste like leaves and grass clippings can be reused in flower beds and gardens.
Using mulch also helps the soil hold moisture, which saves water. It’s an easy way to improve gardens and help the environment at the same time.
The burn ban is part of Alabama’s clean air program under the federal Clean Air Act. It’s one of many efforts to ensure all residents breathe healthier air.
Counties covered by the burn ban in Alabama include:
- Baldwin
- DeKalb
- Etowah
- Jefferson
- Lawrence
- Madison
