Speed Limit Changes Proposed In Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. The departments within the City of Gulf Shores are proposing that speed limits be adjusted in the area to reflect the changes needed in particular areas. In the upcoming meeting with the City Council, a new ordinance will be be proposed to amend the current ordinance, written in 1989.


THE FOLLOWING IS THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE:


Section 1. That CHAPTER 21, TRAFFIC, of the Code of Ordinances, adopted July 24, 1989, be and it is hereby amended at ARTICLE I, IN GENERAL, Section 21-5, Speed Limits, by changing certain speed limits within the corporate limits of the City of Gulf Shores, Alabama, so that the entire Section shall read as follows:


Section 21-5. Speed Limits. The maximum speed for vehicles along the public streets of the City of Gulf Shores shall be as follows:


(1) Along Alabama Highway 180 from the intersection of East Second Street to the intersection of East Tenth Street: 45 miles per hour.


(2) Along Alabama Highway 182 from the west City limits, east, to the west boundary of the Gulf State Park: 35 miles per hour.


(3) Along Alabama Highway 182 from the West boundary of Gulf State Park, east to the corporate line of the City of Orange Beach: 45 miles per hour 


(4) Along Alabama Highway 180 from the intersection of East Tenth Street to the East City limits: 55 miles per hour.


(5) Along 15th Avenue and 16th Avenue, east of Alabama Highway 180 East, and along that portion of East 3rd Street which lies between 15th Avenue and 16th Avenue: 15 miles per hour.


(6) Along that portion of Hilltop Drive which lies between Oak Ridge and West 2nd Street: 15 miles per hour.


(7) From the south terminus of Alabama Highway 59 South and beginning at the southern boundary of Highway 182, extending southerly to the Gulf of Mexico and then in an easterly and westerly direction to the eastern and western terminus of Gulf Place; and then in a northerly direction back to the southern line of Alabama Highway 182: 10 miles per hour.


(8) Along 28th Avenue West, formerly County Road 4 West: 45 miles per hour.


(9) Along Cotton Creek Drive, formerly County Road 4 East, from Highway 59 to the eastern city limits: 45 miles per hour. Ordinance No.


(10) Along Highway 182 West within Laguna Key Subdivision: 15 miles per hour.


(11) All streets within Jordan Run Subdivision: 15 miles per hour.


(12) Along Coastal Gateway Boulevard (formally County Road 8 East) - 45 miles per hour


(13) Along AL-180 from Peninsula Blvd to Regency Road – 45 miles per hour


(14) Along AL-180 from Regency Road to AL-59 – 35 miles per hour;


(15) Along AL-59 from County Road 6 to West 1st St/East 29th Avenue – 45 miles per hour


(16) Along AL-59 from West 1st St/East 29th Avenue to Hwy 182 – 35 miles per hour


(17) Along Summerset Drive, Darla Court, Dawson Drive, Raintree Lane, and Mighty Oaks Drive – 15 miles per hour


(18) All other streets - 25 miles per hour


Section 2. That any and all provisions of any previous Ordinance in conflict or inconsistent with the above are hereby repealed, effective with the date of this amendment.


Section 3. That this Ordinance shall become effective upon its adoption and publication as required by law.

Coach Brewer has piloted the Dolphins bus to this place several times this season, but today a thick, milky fog has engulfed the panorama, limiting the vision of what’s ahead, save for head coach Jason Hill. A decorated urn containing human ashes washed up on Gulf Shores beach this past week, starting a mystery that local police have now solved. The container was discovered by people walking along the shore on West Beach on April 17. The urn had no name or identification on the outside.
