A Backcountry Trail Event for Family Fun

Gulf Shores event news

The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail Foundation is set to bring back its "Treats on the Trail" event on Friday, October 18th, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This family-friendly event offers an enchanting evening of trick-or-treating and fun activities along the picturesque paths off the Orange Beach Sportsplex Trailhead, located at 4385 William Silvers Parkway.

Introduced in 2015, Treats on the Trail has become an October tradition, drawing families from across Baldwin County to enjoy the festive atmosphere. The event was conceived as a safe, entertaining outdoor activity that encourages children and their families to explore the natural beauty of the trails while celebrating the Halloween spirit.

Attendees can look forward to a trail of treats where children, dressed in their Halloween costumes, can go from station to station, collecting candy and participating in various games. Additional highlights include s'more making, where families can gather to roast marshmallows and create their own gooey treats.

Treats on the Trail is open to the public with no admission fee, thanks to the support from local businesses and community volunteers who set up treat stations and games along the trail.

For more information on participating or volunteering at the event, visitors can contact the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail Foundation directly. This October, don’t miss out on a delightful evening of sweets, treats, and trail adventures at Treats on the Trail.

That special time of the year has arrived where beachgoers share the sand with turtles that nest and lay up to 100 eggs per clutch along the beach. The annual nesting season for many of thee sea turtles has been happening long before some of the people ever frolicked amongst the waves. The average life span of most sea turtles is 50 to 100 years and they often return to their place of birth to deposit eggs for the next generation.

Tracking fish with sonar has been available to the public since 1948, when the famous Furuno brothers introduced the product in their native Japan. A 'salty' charter captain might add that it was Lowrance that brought it to the U.S. fishing market. But whomever you credit, NOAA has now combined it with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide better chart mapping and even fish count locations of fish in the gulf. The results could impact local fishing seasons in the future.
