Gulf Shores Road Widening Project

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) —  The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is proceeding with nighttime lane closures along a stretch of Highway 59 in Gulf Shores as part of an ongoing road-widening project. Crews will mill, pave, and stripe the roadway south of County Road 6 through the Fort Morgan Road intersection. The work is part of ALDOT's broader effort to widen the heavily traveled corridor. Single-lane closures will be in effect during nighttime work hours throughout the project.

Work began Thursday evening, July 30, 2026, with crews starting at 7 p.m. Operations are scheduled to resume Sunday, August 2, and will continue through Thursday, August 6, weather permitting. The work schedule runs nightly from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. during that period. ALDOT noted that the schedule is subject to change depending on weather conditions.

Drivers on Highway 59 during those overnight hours should expect slowdowns and reduced lane availability in the construction zone. ALDOT urges motorists to exercise caution and follow all posted signage while traveling through the work area. The agency also appreciates the community's patience during the project. Delays are possible throughout the paving and striping operations.

Drivers using the Holmes Bridge in the area should also be reminded that the newly striped third lane will remain closed until construction of a new pedestrian bridge is finished. No completion date for the pedestrian bridge has been announced. Drivers should expect continued lane restrictions at that location.

Highway 59 is one of the main routes connecting inland Baldwin County to the Gulf Coast beaches, and the corridor experiences heavy traffic during the summer tourist season. The widening project is intended to improve traffic flow along the busy roadway over the long term.
