Foley alum brings decades of experience to top athletic role

Gulf Shores Sports News

For the first time in more than 100 years of high school sports in Baldwin County, a woman will serve as athletic director over all sports at a public high school. Metta Christensen was appointed as Foley High School’s new AD during a recent awards ceremony. This marks a historic first for both the school and countywide public high school athletics. The announcement came as part of a broader change in leadership roles by the Baldwin County Board of Education.

On separating the football coach and athletic director duties, the school board allowed for new appointments across the system. Christensen replaces Deric Scott, who will continue in his role as head football coach for the Lions. Christensen most recently served as the volleyball coach and assistant athletic director at Foley. She is also a graduate of the school and a former standout athlete.

Foley Principal Jessica Webb made the announcement, praising both Scott and Christensen. Webb said Christensen brings experience, leadership, and dedication to the role. She also highlighted ongoing improvements to Foley's athletic facilities. Multi-million dollar upgrades are currently underway across several sports programs.

Christensen said she is honored and ready to lead Foley’s student-athletes. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity and support from the school community. Scott also offered his congratulations, saying Christensen is well-prepared to take on the job.

Christensen began her career with Baldwin County Public Schools in 1995. Before returning to Foley, she coached girls basketball, volleyball, and softball at Baldwin County High School. She led the Lady Tigers basketball team to a Final Four appearance. She also served as head volleyball coach at Robertsdale High School.

As a player, Christensen earned All-State honors and was named 6A Player of the Year at Foley. She played college basketball for the University of South Alabama and earned her degree in Education. She also holds a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of West Florida.

Christensen is a member of both the Foley High School and Baldwin County High School Athletic Halls of Fame.
