Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — The City of Gulf Shores provided an update on the progress of a $24 million pedestrian bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).

The Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge will include two towers, one on each side of the ICW, and a separate plaza project will enhance the areas surrounding the towers.



The South Tower is nearing completion, with electrical work remaining.

At the North Tower, crews are installing and welding vertical steel framing and panel supports. Concrete has already been poured on the stairs and landings.

In the coming weeks, crews will install exterior wall panels across the towers.

“Steel framing and periodic welding inspections will continue on the North Elevator Tower, along with roof and soffit installation over the next several weeks,” the City stated.

Paving and concrete teams will return to the site in the fall. The main bridge superstructure must be built and set in place before the final asphalt wearing surface can be applied. The superstructure components are being fabricated off-site and on-site assembly is on track to take place in early August.

“Once completed, crews are tentatively targeting mid-September to lift and set the bridge onto its substructure,” the City added.

The bridge will sit approximately 75 feet over the ICW. It will connect pedestrians and bicyclists so the biking and walking path on the existing W.C. Holmes Bridge can be turned into an additional travel lane.
