Event to help local musical youths

The Hitting the Note Scholarship Gala, benefitting the Joe Gilchrist Music Fund, is set to take place on Saturday, July 20th at the Perdido Beach Resort. This event’s purpose is to raise funds and provide scholarships for students in Alabama who are pursuing careers in music.


Live music is such an integral part of this community. Joe Gilchrist, a long time owner of the Flora-Bama, recognized the value of local musicians and they need to cherish music education for the youth in the coastal region. His foundation celebrates the music lovers on the island and provides students a financial path to achieve their dreams.


YOU have a chance to help the program and enjoy a special event at the same time. The Hitting the Note Scholarship Gala is set to take place on Saturday, July 20th at the Perdido Beach Resort.


The evening promises a blend of fundraising and entertainment, featuring a full dinner buffet, drinks, silent and live auction items, and performances by renowned songwriters Dean Dillon and Neil Thrasher. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear these artists perform their famous songs and share the stories behind their hits.

  • 4:30pm-5:30pm Cocktail Hour/Silent Auction Bidding
  • 5:30pm Ballroom Doors Open
  • 5:30pm-7pm Dinner
  • 7pm-8:30pm Music Showcase by Dean Dillon & Neil Thraser
  • 8:30pm-9pm Live Auction


Dean Dillon
 is a winner of the BMI Icon Award, a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and a 2020 Country Music Hall of Fame Inductee. His association with George Strait over the year has brought him to the icon status. He composed or co-wrote 76 songs for Strait, 11 of which went to #1. With 26 #1 hits total to his credit, he has received numerous other industry awards.


Neil Thrasher is an Alabama native and one of Nashville’s most accomplished songwriters. With hundreds of songs recorded over the last 25 years by some of Country Music’s most successful artists. His songs have sold more than 50 million records and have spent 25 weeks at #1 including: “There Goes My Life” Kenny Chesney, “Fast Cars and Freedom” Rascal Flatts, “Take Me There” Rascal Flatts, “What Do You Say” Reba, “Fly Over States” Jason Aldean. He is also an ASCAP and CMA Award winner. When not writing songs, producing or singing you will most likely find Neil out on the golf course, in the woods or spending time with his wife and two daughters.

A decorated urn containing human ashes washed up on Gulf Shores beach this past week, starting a mystery that local police have now solved. The container was discovered by people walking along the shore on West Beach on April 17. The urn had no name or identification on the outside.

The Gulf Shores International Airport is preparing for their future growth and addition of a national airline service. Allegiant Airlines is scheduled to begin it's round-trip airlines service in May. Initially the flight will service six different cities with direct flights to Gulf Shores. The airport is rapidly finishing work on a new passenger terminal to accommodate the non-stop airline service.

News readers across the nation have seen images of chaos in many spring break beach towns. The Police Chief in Panama City even posted that their community would have to stop being a spring break town. Incidents in Myrtle Beach, Daytona and Miami have those cities questioning the future of spring break along those beaches.
