As the 2024 hurricane season approaches, the City of Gulf Shores is taking proactive measures to ensure residents and visitors are well-prepared for any potential storms. With forecasters predicting an above-average hurricane season, city officials are urging the community to take necessary precautions and follow recommended guidelines to safeguard themselves and their properties.

City of Gulf Shores Prioritizes Hurricane Preparedness Ahead of Predicted Busy Season

With the NOAA predicting an 85% chance of an above-normal hurricane season this year (click here to read the full article), the City of Gulf Shores is urging residents to take proactive steps to prepare for the start of hurricane season on June 1.

The City of Gulf Shores encourages residents and guests to do the following in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season:

Make sure you have a Current Hurricane Re-entry Decal
Obtaining a Hurricane Re-Entry Decal before a storm occurs is imperative. In the event of an emergency where areas of Gulf Shores are evacuated, Hurricane Re-entry Decals serve to identify those who should be allowed into a restricted area(s) at the appropriate time. Please note: once a Hurricane Warning is issued for Gulf Shores, re-entry decals are no longer distributed. Stay Informed & Connected
Residents are encouraged to sign up for Notify Me, the City's free notification program, to receive important information, updates, and alerts regarding severe weather. Sign up for Notify Me by visiting www.gulfshoresAL.gov/NotifyMe. Another way to receive accurate severe weather information is by following reliable social media channels such as the US National Weather Service Mobile Alabama, City of Gulf Shores, and Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency for updates. 

Prepare your Property
There are several ways you can prepare your home to help protect it from the effects of hurricanes. Around your property, trim trees and declutter drains and gutters. When a storm is approaching, bring in outdoor objects that could become flying debris, install hurricane shutters, and utilize sandbags. If you notice a drainage issue that could cause flooding, contact the City's Public Works Department at 251.968.1156.

Gather Supplies
Remember, the first 72 hours after a storm are on you. Every home needs an emergency kit with a three-day supply of food, water, and other basic necessities. When gathering supplies, consider your family's specific needs, including supplies for pets and any special medications required for household members. Have a Plan
In the event of an emergency and an evacuation is mandated, it is important to have a plan set in place. Your plan should outline where you are going, how you are going to get there, and how long your trip should take. Once you have a plan, share it with your friends and family members so they are informed of your whereabouts in case you are unable to contact them.

Attend the City of Gulf Shores Annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo
In preparation for Hurricane Season, the City of Gulf Shores is hosting its Annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo on Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center. This free event offers the public an opportunity to educate themselves on hurricane preparedness and the many products and services available before, during, and after a storm. Federal, state, and local agencies, as well as local businesses specializing in storm products and services, will be in attendance.
