Whether it’s a rainy day or not, up for the heat at the beach day, a trip to explore the fabulous downtown Foley with a stop at Yabba’s Wacky Snack Shack is always a great choice. The owner of this delightful shop has deep coastal roots, with the name itself being one of the nicknames given to them during their middle school days as a local in Gulf Shores. After diving into the study of mathematics to sharpen their analytical skills, this aspiring entrepreneur returned to their true passion for the coast. Supported by their mother, they opened Yabba’s Wacky Snack Shack in 2011, blending creativity with their newfound analytical background. This family-friendly destination is filled with the aroma of sugary treats and offers a welcoming atmosphere. It has become a true family affair, bringing together innovators, snack testers, with great success eventually leading to expansion. When you visit Yabba’s, you’ll find much more than just ice cream on the menu. There’s a wide selection of adorable gifts, candies, nostalgic items, lunch options, chocolates, fudge, and a cozy place to sit and enjoy either indoors or outdoors. If you're in town for a special occasion, or if you’re a local, be sure to ask about Yabba’s birthday party packages and other event offerings, as well as tours of the party rooms. Happy snacking!

June is a month dedicated to raising awareness about environmental water issues, featuring events such as World Ocean Day and various global and local cleanup efforts. It includes entire weeks focused on trash pick-ups and even a Sea Turtle Week. Coastal artists worldwide, including those from our local Gulf area, have created innovative art pieces using trash found in our oceans, on beaches, and from docks and boats. This unique expression helps highlight the problem of pollution, making the upcoming Tacky Jack's Summer of Fun — Art al Fresco an ideal event for this environmentally conscious month. Reservations are required for this special event—no walk-ins will be accepted. The cost is $25, which includes a $10 lunch gift card. During the session, young artists will learn to transform trash (pollution) into creative works of art with guidance from a local artist. Participants will create their own repurposed "Plastic Pollution Fish and Frame." The class lasts for one hour, but the fun doesn’t have to end there. Be sure to stick around to use your lunch gift card, enjoy outdoor play area activities, explore the grounds, and browse the whimsical gift shop. As always, please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early for this fun and educational art day!

Deciding where to dine while visiting our island can be a big decision, even locals sometimes struggle to keep up with all the new openings and rebranding in this bustling area. Often, it's wise to choose establishments with a long-standing reputation—those that have garnered loyal followings and have roots in the local community. Many of these businesses were founded by families who have been part of the area since its early days as a small fishing village. Although the town has undergone many changes, quality seafood—whether regional or not—has always remained a top priority, with offerings ranging from casual to upscale dining. Restaurant owners frequently draw inspiration from their heritage, travels abroad, or experiences during and after their schooling, crafting menus that combine unique flavors and create memorable dining experiences. Big Fish in Orange Beach is a prime example of this, boasting over 15 years as one of the area's top dining spots. What sets Big Fish apart is its blend of local Gulf cuisine with influences from Bangkok, all rooted in a love story that began in the kitchen. The establishment was inspired by a meal prepared by the owner, Leck, to impress his now-wife and business partner, Jana. Together with a dedicated kitchen crew, they run Big Fish, making it a special destination where guests can often express their gratitude personally to those behind its success. Open daily at 3 PM, stop by after a day at the beach and enjoy a culinary journey to another coast just down the road. Where the owners and staff always look forward to welcoming you!
