S'mores on the Shore Event in Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — What has grown into one of the most beloved local events is returning to the beaches of Gulf Shores. Campfires, music, s’mores, and so much more will be the scene as the City  of Gulf Shores hosts S’mores on the Shore on Thursday, August 6. The fun is set to begin at 6  p.m. and will take place at Gulf Place, 101 Gulf Shores Parkway.

This family-friendly event will include a variety of free items and activities, including s’mores  packets, a live DJ, a balloon artist, and face painting. Our friends from Wheeles Realty are  returning with more fresh, delicious watermelon for everyone to enjoy! We will also have a great  selection of local vendors, such as the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, Gulf Shores & Orange Beach  Tourism, Gulf Shores Police Department K9 Division, and many more. Hog Wild food truck and  the Lions Club will be onsite for those who wish to purchase food. Families are encouraged to  bring blankets, chairs, and friends, and relax together on the beautiful white sand of the Gulf  Shores Public Beach.

"We started S’mores on the Shore in 2010, and it quickly became a fan-favorite amongst our  residents and guests,” said Recreation & Cultural Affairs Director Grant Brown. “It’s the perfect  event for families of all ages who are looking for a little free fun and excitement. When you  combine our beautiful beaches, music, campfires, and s’mores, it really does make for an  incredible night.”

Origin of S'mores:

The earliest known recipe appeared in 1925 in a Norwalk Hour newspaper article, describing "Some-mores" as a treat made by Girl Scouts, consisting of graham crackers, chocolate, and toasted marshmallows.

The name "Some More" was likely shortened to "s'more" over time due to the addictive nature of the treat. Early variations included "yummies" and "toasted marshmallow delights".
